Police on Thursday arrested a 31-year-old man, who is the third person accused of allegedly raping a tribal girl earlier this week in Surat, on a train at the Sabarmati Junction Railway station in Ahmedabad.
The third accused, arrested by the local crime branch staff of Western Railway Ahmedabad Division, has been identified as Ramsajivan Vishwakarma, 31), a resident of Karanj near Kim and a native of Uttar Pradesh. A team of Surat police arrested Vishwakarma and brought him back to the city on Friday. He was later arrested by the local police.
On Wednesday, the police arrested Munna Paswan (40) and Shivshanker Chaurasia (45) from different areas of Tadkeshwar village in Mangrol and brought them to the office of the Local Crime Branch in Kamrej where they were questioned. On Thursday evening, Chaurasia, who was admitted to the hospital after complaining of chest pain, was pronounced dead. On the same day, Paswan was produced before the Surat district court which sent him to police custody till October 17.
Surat DSP Hitesh Joyser said, “We were hunting for the third accused and got information that he was traveling by Dadar-Ajmer Express train on Thursday. We immediately informed the officials of Western Railway, who took immediate action and entered the train from Ahmedabad railway station and found Vishwakarma sitting in a standard coach.”
He said, “After basic investigation, Vishwakarma shared that he was sleeping in an agricultural field near Tadkeshwar village on Tuesday. The next morning, he reached Ankleshwar and from there, went to Bharuch in an auto-rickshaw. He boarded the MEMU train from Bharuch and reached Vadodara on Thursday evening. Vishwakarma learned that two of his friends had been arrested and that the police had launched a search operation. He then decided to leave the region and boarded the train.”
On Tuesday, a 17-year-old girl, who was going home with her 22-year-old friend, was beaten and raped by three men. The suspect is said to have assaulted the girl’s friend, undressed her and recorded the video. The man somehow escaped from the area and informed the residents. However, by the time they arrived, the accused had fled. The police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act and the POCSO Act.
