Visitors to the office of the Tiruvallur District Collector can now browse the public library.
The library established at the Tiruvallur District Collector’s office is the first of 100 public libraries, which the Tamil Nadu government School Education Department plans to set up in high-footprint public areas. Ministers Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and SM Nasar inaugurated the public library last week.
The library has a collection of about 3,000 books, apart from daily newspapers including The Hindu and books. It also has a built-in library with invisible desktop access. Mr. Poyyamozhi gave a sum of ₹50,000 for library development fund to Collector T. Prabhushankar.
“A prominent feature is the ‘Library Garden’ where students can immerse themselves in books in a green environment. Thin stone benches with tables are set in the green grass and many trees. The ‘Thinnai’ in between will make learning fun and relaxing,” said Mr. Prabhushankar.
In February this year, the Tamil Nadu government announced that 100 libraries and learning centers would be set up in public places like hospitals, bus stands among others.
Finally, the Ministry of School Education issued a GO in this regard and it was issued on March 14 this year to set up libraries and study centers in public places in 100 places across the State.
