Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi will visit Mumbai today to take stock of the situation after the meeting an accident between a marine speedboat and a boat which left at least 14 people dead and 99 others injured.
Admiral Tripathi will also be briefed in detail about the incident by officials of the Western Naval Command, sources told India Today TV.
The Navy Chief will also visit the area off the coast of Mumbai where the accident took place. He will also meet the injured personnel who have been admitted to INHS Ashwini naval hospital in Mumbai. He will also be given full details about the accident.
The naval boat undergoing engine test lost control and collided with the passenger ferry ‘Neel Kamal’ from Karanja near Mumbai. Of the 113 people who were on both ships, 13 died and 98, including two injured, were rescued. Two people are still missing. There were six people aboard the Navy ship, two of whom survived.
Earlier on Thursday, the Indian Navy set up a ‘Board of Inquiry’ to investigate the incident. The Navy said Search and Rescue (SAR) efforts continued during the night of December 18-19 at the crash site.
Two people from the boat are still reported missing and search and rescue (SAR) operations are still ongoing with eight Navy ships and a naval helicopter deployed by a Coast Guard ship.
“The board investigating the accident has been ordered to find out the facts of the case,” said the military.
A An investigation into the incident is underway with the Mumbai Police after a case was registered against the Navy pilot at the Colaba police station.
The sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita included in the FIR include those related to causing death by negligence, acts endangering personal safety or the life of others, rash or negligent navigation of a vessel and acts of wrongdoing causing loss or wrongful injury to persons or society.
