If you haven’t watched it The Penguinyou have to get into that. The show was doing an excellent job of showing the comic book crime boss on the rise and doing so in a much more grounded way than DC Comics and Batman would suggest. For the most part, the show requires missing information on events from Matt Reeves’ 2022 film the show is based on. However, the third episode of the show, “Bliss,” was of great benefit to those in the know.
The third episode started with us learning more about Victor (Rhenzy Feliz), the young man we saw a little bit who becomes Oz’s (Colin Farrell) right-hand man. Victor is at home with his family, his friends, we get to see a little bit of what makes him human. At some point, Victor and his girlfriend look at Gotham City and talk about how beautiful it is. However, he suggests that the people of Gotham do not feel the same way about his neighborhood of Crown Point. At about this moment, they heard what they only expected to be fireworks…not fireworks. It exploded. One after the other and that’s when it all clicks into place if you’ve noticed Batman.
What we see is the Riddler’s plan to blow up the seawall but with a view of the damage path. Water begins to fill Victor’s road and we see it rise and destroy his building, killing his entire family.
Things go on from there but we just wanted to be surprised (pun intended) by the storytelling here. First, there’s the reveal that you’re watching a flashback. It’s entirely possible at first that Victor just has a night of work with Oz. But, when we realize that this is happening in the film’s timeline – set a few months before the show – things change. If you’ve seen the movie, you totally get a sense of the destruction the Riddler has caused. But here, in the third episode of The Penguinwe feel on another level.
Victor may not be ahead The Penguinbut he is a listener. Coming in with a front row seat to a gang sleeper, he tricks, and steals his way to the top of Gotham. We love him, we feel for him, and we feel a great emotional impact on his decisions. And here, because of what Riddle did to his family, we better understand his situation. We have more insight into why he sticks with Oz and, we can imagine, there will be ramifications for the rest. the exhibition.
These are all things, if you just look The Penguin as a casual viewer, you get to some extent. What you really need to understand is that “the explosion killed Victor’s family.” But, if you saw Batmanyou know who did it and why they did it—and everything hurts so much. It’s an amazing use of the show’s franchise setting without really showing off about it.
