The standing committee on external affairs headed by Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor met in Parliament on Monday to select topics to be discussed during his tenure.
Sources told CNN-News18 that the committee has selected 17 topics to be discussed in the following months before the team submits its report to Parliament.
Most of the members of this committee are new members of the group and play a major role in choosing the topics to be discussed. Apart from Dr Tharoor, senior MPs like Asaduddin Owaisi are part of the panel.
Many members suggested that the committee deal with the important issue of the situation in West Asia and its impact.
The situation is very critical and India is closely monitoring what is happening in the region, sources in the government have already said.
Dr Tharoor, a former foreign minister, managed to convince the committee that the panel could ask the ministry officials to depose before it on the situation in West Asia. However, that is the last time the committee has been informed of what is going on, sources said. They added that it is possible that this team will not write or send a report on this matter. “This is a changing issue and it will not be possible for the committee to make a report on an issue like this,” the source told CNN-News18.
Apart from the situation in West Asia, several members of Parliament would like to talk about the issue of immigrants from India coming to these countries and their situations, etc. to be deceived and put in dangerous situations.
“It is a very important issue and it affects India because a lot of Indians live all over the world and in these countries and contribute a lot to the Indian economy,” said the source.
The committee will also discuss issues affecting the neighbors, especially what has been seen in Bangladesh since the overthrow of Sheikh Haseena, and Sri Lanka. All issues related to neighboring nations will be discussed under one topic: India’s territorial policy. In fact, during the last session of the Parliament, when the government held an all-party meeting on the Bangladesh situation, sources said that the foreign minister S Jaishankar has assured the parties that when the negotiating committees will be formed, he will take strict action. an issue of India’s local policy.
While the standing committee has Dr Tharoor as its chairman, the consultative committee on external affairs will be headed by Dr Jaishankar himself.
Apart from this, sources said that the committee would like to be briefed on issues like Passport Seva Kendras across the country. The delegation, as of now, has decided not to discuss the situation between Ukraine and Russia.
As for the situation in West Asia, India is adamant that war is not the solution to any problem. As in the past during the Ukraine crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked all parties to exercise restraint. India has unequivocally condemned the Hamas attack on Israel last year. The recent events after Israel’s invasion of Lebanon and the invasion of Iran have furthered the situation as it may exacerbate the regional conflict.
Some of India’s concerns in the region include mass dispersal, rising energy prices, and issues in the global south. Prime Minister Modi met Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas in New York recently and spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the phone, offering India’s support for talks.
