Why did “The Storyteller” finally make it to television, then? Two months had passed without Paramount buying any of the DS9 scripts and Piller needed to get the good stories to use.
He gave the green light to this script for the simple reason that “I needed shows and I needed to put some things in development.”
This was good news for Kurt Michael Bensmiller, but he had to hurry: when Piller contacted him, the writer had to start preparing “The Storyteller” for a new program right away.
He also had to do that without seeing the episodes, as he had been writing the script for the past few weeks Deep Space Nine started. It was co-written by future showrunner Ira Steven Behr, and together, both men are credited with introducing the Bashir/O’Brien dynamic that can be felt throughout the show.
