The new era of sports is a blessing because athletes have easy access to social media and love to indulge in old-fashioned surfing.
After losing Rashee Rice to what is believed to be a serious knee injury, it’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs need a wide receiver. Look around the league, and the Miami Dolphins may seem like a team ready to trade some assets as they make a run at the AFC East without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Enter the Tyreek Hill trade rumors.
On Wednesday, Hill downplayed trade rumors amid Miami’s 1-3 start to the 2024 campaign.
“I’m focused here, right now,” Hill told reporters. “We have a great team here, and I want to be a part of it.”
But after the comment, Hill took to social media to stir the pot, dropping a meme that sent social media into a frenzy for hours.
Later, he posted how much he likes to take us all.
There’s no denying that the Cheetahs’ production has dropped significantly since losing Tagovailoa to the dreaded conference that put him on injured reserve.
Skylar Thompson was ineffective in his two starts with the Dolphins. With Tyler Huntley playing at quarterback on Monday Night Football against the Tennessee Titans, Hill caught four passes for just 23 yards. He was bitter on the sidelines, and that was caught on camera. It looks like a player who won’t mind being sold.
“I wouldn’t refer to it as shouting; I’m just the one motivating my colleagues,” explained Hill in this video that went viral.
At this point, you have to take Hill at his word. While plenty of pundits want to see the Chiefs talk about a trade, he seems to like Miami, despite the lack of production. And for good reason.
He made less than $30 million to suit up for the Fins this year. In the great state of Florida, he doesn’t pay any federal income tax on that, either.
It’s fun to fantasize about what a reunion with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid would look like in Kansas City, especially if they really need it. The Chiefs scored 4-0, but that offense doesn’t look good, especially because of the many injuries they sustained.
Mahomes and Hill make great, great music together. Flashbacks of Hill running into the end zone, throwing deuces and immediately doing a backflip replay in the minds of NFL fans everywhere. Acquiring Hill in a trade would be like buying an amusement park fast pass to their third straight Super Bowl championship.
But for now, it might be time to move on from those memories.
The Dolphins won’t eat a dime of that contract. Head coach Mike McDaniel likes the pairing of a healthy Tagovailoa, who is expected to return soon, and Speedy Hill. Not to mention that you will be hard-pressed to find a team in the AFC that will willingly help Reid and the Chiefs lift their third consecutive Lombardi trophy.
