Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate was one-sided.
Sen. JD Vance was steady, calm, friendly, likable, and in control of the facts himself.
In contrast, Gov. Tim Walz started a debate that was painful to watch. He then made a series of mistakes that he collectively pulled off. It was hard to believe that he was on the national ticket.
VANCE VS. THE WALZ CONTROVERSY: THE BIGGEST THINGS FROM VP CANDIDATES
Callista and I went to bed Tuesday night convinced that Sen. Vance won a big victory. In that victory, he reaffirmed President Donald J. Trump’s gamble in choosing a running mate so early in his career. At 40, with only two years in the US Senate, Vance is only a few months older than Richard Nixon when President Dwight Eisenhower picked him to be the Republican vice president in 1952. Nixon would remain a major part of politics for 42 years. That will give Sen. Vance’s potential role in American government and politics through 2066.
When I woke up on Wednesday morning, almost every explanation confirmed the idea that the debate was an oddity.
This new reality is best summed up by Mark Halperin at Global News Magazine:
“1. One could pretend, as most of the Dominant Media does, that Tim Walz was not ‘copped’ by JD Vance, but, honest Joe Klein (fully confirmed as a second-in-command for defying Donald Trump and Vance) told the world, Walz was really tied, so bad that ‘it wasn’t as bad as Biden’s weak performance in June, but it was close.’ Remember: Biden’s perf[romance] it was so bad that it ended his election and his career. “
Pollster Frank Luntz tweeted that his constituency voted 12 to 2 for Vance.
Glenn Greenwald posted on X: “The weirdest part of that debate was how Tim Walz repeatedly and blatantly attacked the Dems on Trump/Vance: that they’re “weird,” accidents out of the ordinary.”
“Everything Walz said treated Vance as normal, reasonable, and likable.”
New York Times columnist Ross Douthat posted: “I would rate it as the most successful Republican debate performance of this century, surpassing Romney’s first debate with Obama in 2012.”
Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume dismissed the performances of incumbents Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan, saying they were “disgusting” and turning the debate into an anti-Vance proposition.
These were just a few. The Trump-Vance campaign is not gathering much there are 22 journalists and public figures who have acknowledged that Vance introduced Walz.
Donald Trump Jr. was the third biggest winner in the debate. He was very supportive of Sen. Vance as a running mate and worked to get his father to vote for him. That choice proved to be very effective.
Like Caitlin Doornbos in The NY Post wrote that, the problems of Gov. Walz started at the beginning.
“Tim Walz got one chance to make his first appearance at the vice presidential debate Tuesday night, and he blew it in front of his opponent, JD Vance, you also got a chance to speak. “
His anxiety made him unable to face the challenge.
Finally, Gov. Walz said a few strange things.
In a clear moment of confusion, he said he would be “friends with the school shooter.” When asked why he lied about being in Tiananmen Square during the repression and killing of pro-democracy students in 1989, Walz ended up calling himself a “knucklehead” for simply telling a lie.

Being a “knucklehead candidate” is not a good way to campaign in the last five weeks before an election.
After last night, Sen. Vance is a major national figure among Republicans and conservatives. He will have more campaign influence than he did before the debate.
After Tuesday night, Gov. Walz will be seen by most Americans as someone who is clearly not ready to be president or vice president.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s comments that she was tired and sleepless during the campaign will now be seen as the first step in diminishing her role – and her ability to make decisions under pressure.

A confirmed President Trump will campaign with great enthusiasm and a sense of confidence that he has built himself a winning ticket.
It was a bigger night than I expected.
