Mumbai has reported 41 deaths this year from monsoon-related diseases, including leptospirosis, dengue, malaria, swine flu and hepatitis. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released the figures amid growing concern over the health impact of the monsoon season.
Of the 41 deaths, 18 were caused by leptospirosis, which is usually contracted through contact with contaminated water, primarily through the urine of infected animals. 12 people died from dengue, and five died from swine flu and malaria. One person died of hepatitis, which can be a result of drinking contaminated water.
The increase in mosquito-borne diseases was greater in September compared to August. According to BMC health department data, there were 1,171 malaria cases and 1,013 dengue cases reported in August. In September, these numbers increased to 1,261 cases of malaria and 1,456 cases of dengue. Dr Daksha Shah, Chief Health Officer of BMC, emphasized the importance of public awareness about preventive measures.
“Residents should avoid standing water around their homes and maintain cleanliness to reduce mosquito breeding,” he advised.
While some diseases have increased, other conditions have decreased. Cases of chikungunya, swine flu, hepatitis, and gastroenteritis decreased in September compared to August. For example, chikungunya cases dropped from 164 in August to 156 in September. The number of leptospirosis cases also decreased from 272 to 75.
Dr Mohan Joshi, superintendent of Sion Hospital, said, “We have seen an increase in flu cases following the recent rains; however, it is important to highlight that most patients usually recover within a week. This rapid recovery is mainly due to early diagnosis and effective treatment, which is essential in managing these diseases and reducing the risk of complications.”
The BMC is closely monitoring the situation and urges the public to remain vigilant.
