The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain in Nepal rose to 193 on Monday, as rescue and relief operations intensified. At least 30 people are still missing, and another 194 are injured across the country.
At least 34 people lost their lives in Kathmandu, which was one of the worst affected cities. The southern part of the city returned to normal on Monday, as the water began to recede.
Several roads in the country have been severely damaged, while all roads leading to the capital Kathmandu remain closed, the media said. The PTI reports, quoting Kathmandu Post.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior in Nepal, Rishiram Tiwari, said that efforts are underway to clear the main roads blocked by landslides, in order to resume transportation.
Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who returned after attending the UN General Assembly, called an emergency meeting when he arrived on Monday.
Nepal’s Interior Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, announced the construction of temporary shelters for those displaced, as well as financial assistance for the families of the dead and injured. The government also announced the closure of schools for the next three days.
