UFC White House coverage: Justin Gaethje makes history, Cyril Gane makes a statement

Still holding on UFC Freedom 250 On the South Lawn of the White House it was controversial, it cannot be denied that the event brought great drama and unparalleled action in a unique setting where mixed martial arts were contested. Action met the moment, too.

UFC at the White House featured fewer fights than regular events; however, no other UFC card has ended with every fight coming to an end. Besides, the action-packed main event between lightweight champion Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, figuratively and conceptually, caused fireworks. Gaethje showed everything that makes him a special fighter in surviving Topuria’s relentless onslaught to earn the win after four rounds of back-and-forth action.

UFC Freedom 250 was a uniquely memorable event at an incredible venue. With that in mind, let’s dive into the highlights from the event.

Justin Gaethje has left his mark on the history of combat sports

Gaethje is a late departure from my list of The top 25 American fights in UFC historybut after another Gaethje-style trademark win over Topuria to claim the lightweight championship, he’ll surely jump up the list. Everything that makes Gaethje special as a hero was on display Sunday night. He showed heart, grit, strength and a willingness to go deep that few others would dare to take his first undisputed UFC championship. Gaethje didn’t hold back in admitting that Topuria hurt him badly in both the head and liver in their fight, but he also didn’t hold back in continuing to fire a vicious shot at Topuria, turning the champion’s face to pieces and forcing the fight to be stopped in the corner after four rounds.

Gaethje represents a mixed martial artist worthy of many fans. He is a man who will go through absolute hell to get a gun that he believes will change the way of fighting. There may not have been anyone else on Earth who could have survived Topuria’s onslaught and gone on to win, but that is Gaethje, a special fighter who will remain in the hearts and minds of MMA fans for decades to come. Stop fighting, stop fighting, and now, stop fighting.

Cyril Gane made a big statement

Until someone takes the belt from him, Tom Aspinall is the king of the heavyweight division. Still, Cyril Gane threw down the gauntlet on Sunday, making a statement big enough to cast doubt on whether Aspinall really is the UFC’s best bantamweight. When Gane and Aspinall met at UFC 321, Gane was getting the better of the fight before digging two fingers deep into Aspinall’s eyes. Aspinall has been sidelined while dealing with this eye injury and related surgery from that fight in October 2025.

Gane missed his chance that night, which can only be blamed on his actions in the Octagon. But compared to the legend of the South Lawn of the White House, he looked better than ever. Alex Pereira, a two-time middleweight and light heavyweight champion, is a dangerous fighter at any weight, but Gane had his number from the jump. before hitting the second stoppage round. Aside from the eye injury, Aspinall and the UFC are not on strong terms at the moment, which puts Gane as the champion that Aspinall should follow in the footsteps of former heavyweight champions Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones by vacating the belt, and could make him the favorite if a rematch comes to fruition.

Sean O’Malley will probably have to wait

After Peter Yan took the bantamweight title from Merab Dvalishvili in their UFC 323 rematch, it opened the door for Sean O’Malley to get another crack at bantamweight. O’Malley lost the title to Dvalishvili and dropped a rematch with Dvalishvili leaving little to no speculation as to who was the better man throughout the night. After O’Malley hit ia Aiemann Zahabi’s TKO was much needed on Sunday to win his second fight since the Dvalishvili fight, called a fight with Yan

It would appear that the plan is for a trilogy bout between Yan and Dvalishvili, and how that fight goes, as well as O’Malley’s chances at a title shot. There is no valid reason for O’Malley vs. Dvalishvili III, so if Dvalishvili regains the belt, O’Malley could be left out in the cold. O’Malley has a 2022 split decision win over Yan, however, which means a Yan victory over Dvalishvili would make O’Malley an easy loss. If the UFC books a rematch between Yan and Dvalishvili, there won’t be any viewers as interested as O’Malley.

Before the title shot, Josh Hokit must take another step

After hitting Derrick Lewis who seemed apathetic and tired another big win in his young UFC careerJosh Hokit should look for another top level striker well before entering the tournament. This fight didn’t require the same level of skill or heart as Hokit’s victory over Curtis Blaydes, but it was another big win for the controversial and “frustrated” Hokit. While Hokit called Pereira, who was yet to fight Gane for the interim heavyweight title in the main event, it sounds like there’s another tough hurdle for Hokit to clear before going for the gold: Alexander Volkov.

Volkov is often overlooked in heavyweight discussions, but he is 6-1, and has only one internationally accepted knockout loss in the Volkov vs. Gane fight. If the judges had done it right that night, it would have been Volkov facing Aspinall, not Gane, who had been eyeing the heavyweight champion for months. If Hokit could clear Volkov’s barrier, there would be no denying the future title. But defeating this version of Lewis is not something that should put Hokit in the title conversation.

Mauricio Ruffy may be the champion’s boogeyman

Mauricio Ruffy has shown the type of striking that makes him a joy to watch when scoring goals Michael Chandler’s first round. That kind of striking style can be dangerous, as the lack of spinning strikes can leave a fighter open to takedowns. But heading into the evening, it was clear that the lightweight champion would be the first striker. With long limbs and a willingness to use them at the right distance and unusual angles with great strength, Luffy presents an interesting puzzle for Gaethje to solve when the two soon meet. Luffy is not a perfect fighter, as shown when Benoit Saint Denis put on a wrestling clinic against him three fights ago, but any fighter who wants to beat Luffy is taking a serious risk. Gaethje has more than enough proof that he can take incredible punishment while continuing to march forward. Still, no one is safe from a striker as powerful as Luffy, and if Gaethje isn’t careful, Luffy could be his kryptonite.

Bo Nickal continues to emerge as the ultimate hero

Always holding a wrestling advantage over his opponents, few fighters can be as one-sided as Bo Nickal in the modern era. To that end, Nickal’s hitting continues to improve, as he has shown Kyle Daukaus in the first round per week. After wearing down Daukaus with his wrestling and top game, Nickal may have been frustrated by the questionable referee’s stoppage. Instead, he responded to Daukaus’ attempts to flip the script with his scoring punch and escaped to end the first round.

Diego Lopes is not going anywhere as a competitor

Although Diego Lopes may have lost two featherweight fights to Alexander Volkanovski, he will not be discouraged as he competes at 145 kilograms. It’s unlikely that Lopes will get another chance at the belt as long as Volkanovski holds it, but he did shine in his first place in the division. beating Steve Garcia at UFC Freedom 250. Lopes’ defensive credentials were on display early, with Garcia landing some good shots that Lopes seemed reluctant to engage for much of the first round, but so did his steel chin. Lopes caught Garcia’s heavy blows before deciding it was time to bite his lip and come forward in the second round. When Lopes was on the attack, he made Garcia move and then passed out in a big statement win.

Bring back live bands and choruses

A live military band and choir provided a unique and special atmosphere to Sunday’s performances. Live covers of different songs by these great boxers were undoubtedly the highlight of the event where seven knockouts in seven fights, which is saying something impressive for such a unique and historic event. If the UFC takes anything away from Freedom 250, let it be how a small change like live music can make an event feel special.
