The Gurugram police have opened a crackdown on WhatsApp directors and Nodal officials after the app refused to provide details on certain accounts in connection with the investigation.
According to the police, while investigating the case, the Gurugram police sent a notification on WhatsApp by mail on July 17, seeking specific information on specific mobile numbers. However, WhatsApp did not comply with that and instead raised objections in an illegal manner.
On July 25, the police sent another request with details related to some mobile numbers, but WhatsApp again did not respond on August 28. Despite repeated follow-ups, WhatsApp did not share the required information with the police.
The police revealed that WhatsApp’s non-cooperation is helping the suspects in this case. As a result, a case was registered against WhatsApp directors and Nodal officials on Saturday at the Cyber ​​Crime East police station in Gurugram under sections 223(A), 241, 249(C) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Information Technology Act.
“Although they are bound by law to provide the requested information under the existing laws of the country, WhatsApp management violated the instructions of the law by not providing the information they were looking for,” the police said in a statement.
