Junior doctors in West Bengal on Saturday night said they will once again go on ‘walkout’ from medical colleges in the state after the RG Kar case was heard in the Supreme Court on Monday.

Their decision was taken after three doctors and three nurses were beaten following the death of a patient at the Sagore Dutta College of Medicine and Hospital near Kolkata on Friday night.

The doctors alleged that the attack on the Sagore Dutta hospital showed that the state government had “completely failed” to keep its promises to provide them with security.

“We are giving the government some time and we want to hear their submissions about our safety in the Supreme Court on Monday. Then, from 5 PM we will start suspending operations in all hospitals across Bengal,” said one of the junior doctors.

Junior doctors on September 21 resumed work in various government-run hospitals in West Bengal after a 42-day hiatus. They were ‘stopping work’ to protest the rape of a female doctor who was on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
