As the water levels in Poland’s rivers recede again, the country’s authorities are assessing the victims and damage of the devastating floods.
Nine bodies have been found, said police chief Marek Boron following a Cabinet meeting in Warsaw. He said the number of confirmed deaths has increased by two. In addition, one person is still missing.
The two bodies that were recently found are still unclear, said Boron.
In areas most threatened by floods, residents are still at risk due to the recent effects, Boron warns.
In the past 24 hours, he said, another 20 people were evacuated from their homes due to the risk of falling. In total, 4,778 people had to leave their homes at least temporarily due to the floods.
According to the PAP news agency, the government has so far released 623 million zlotys ($163 million) in flood aid to those affected.
Thanks to the deployment of police and military helicopters, “199 lives” were saved from the immediate danger, Boron said. In addition, psychologists have been sent to help those affected at the site.
The floods temporarily closed 89 roads. According to Boron, the police also recorded 22 cases of robbery and other crimes, where the plight of many people was exploited. This includes false fundraising for alleged victims.
