Facing a backlash over Singh’s announcement on mandatory disclosure of names by street vendors, the Himachal Pradesh government on Thursday said no such decision had been taken.

Singh, who is the minister of Public Works and Urban Development, yesterday Wednesday told the media that it will be compulsory for street vendors, especially those who sell food, to show their identity cards in their shops.

The decision, he said, was inspired by a similar order announced by the Uttar Pradesh government headed by Yogi Adityanath.

Dissociating itself from Singh’s statement, the state government in a statement said that it has not taken any decision to compel street vendors to display name plates or other identifiers at their bus stops.

Singh said the decision was taken in view of the “fear” expressed by many locals about the growing number of migrants in the state.

He also criticized many leaders of the INDIA party while posting his comments on Facebook.

Himachal Pradesh AICC chief Rajiv Shukla said he discussed the matter with Singh and the chief minister.

“They will be given licenses and guided so that the police will not harass them. The designated areas will need to identify Aadhaar cards and licenses but there is no need for them to display a sign stating their names as owners,” Shukla told the media. in Jammu on Thursday.
