“There was an unfortunate incident of fire at our place in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Our emergency procedures in the plant ensured that all our employees were safe. The cause of the fire is being investigated and we will take appropriate measures to protect our employees and others involved,” Tata Electronics said in a statement.

The fire, according to media reports, started in the mobile phone accessories painting area of the company in Uddanapalli. Although three workers showed signs of breathing, they were taken to a private hospital, where they are reported to be stable.

This comes at a time when Tata Electronics was supposed to start production at its iPhone assembly plant in Hosur’s Koothanapalli. Hosur will be Tata Electronics’ second iPhone assembly facility following its acquisition of Taiwanese EMS player Wistron’s unit, which has been in operation for two years.

Tata Electronics is expected to invest around Rs 6,000 crore in the assembly plant and has invested a similar amount in a component factory supplying Apple at the same location.

The combined facilities, according to sources, will employ more than 50,000 blue-collar workers, most of whom are women. The iPhone assembly plant alone will add 35,000-40,000 workers, making it one of Apple’s largest factories in India, second only to Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu facility.
