Every week e The NFLbettors, sports books or both are crying out for some kind of bad beat.
Whether it’s a spread pick, a money line bet, or a bet on the number of points scored— there’s always one event that affects a few bets.
In Thursday night’s football game between the Giants and the Cowboys, it was the spread of the Cowboys (-5.5) where bettors felt the pain.
Let’s check how it all went down.
Brandon Aubrey missed the first ever field goal by 50 yards
Bettors who bet on the Cowboys for a combined 5.5 points saw victory flash before their eyes.
With 2:28 left in the fourth quarter, and the Cowboys leading 20-15, Dallas looked to close things out against New York on the road.
Mike McCarthy’s team ran the ball three plays in a row to run out as much clock as possible, the drive leading to a fourth down with 32 seconds left in the game.
Brandon Aubrey, who was 12-for-12 on the season and 48-for-50 in his career, stepped onto the field to drop what everyone expected to be an automatic. For perspective, Aubrey had kicked a 60-yard field goal early in the third quarter- a week after kicking a 65-yarder to set the record as the second-longest field goal in NFL history.
Even more impressive is that his performance made him 16 of 16 on field goals from 50+ yards in his career— extending his record for the longest kickoff return by any kicker in NFL history.
So what’s a 51-yard attempt for him, especially since the game is over?
Somehow, Aubrey missed it. His streak was snapped, and more importantly, the bettors who took the Cowboys to cover the 5.5 point spread lost. A field goal would also win the bettors who were betting on the spread when there were six points.
Daniel Jones would go on to throw the shutout in one last attempt to win the game, and the final score would remain at 20-15. With three 60-yard field goals, Aubrey needs just one more to tie the NFL record set by Brett Maher. He also joined Greg Zuerlein, Matt Prater and Maher as the only kickers in NFL history with three or more field goals of 60-plus yards.
