Pete Alonso’s return is growing less likely, according to the METS’ top billing

It looks like Pete Alonso is going, going, going.

Fent Fent’s Amazin’ Danga from Citi didn’t bring a surprising solution to the Agent Saga – but it seemed to confirm that the New York Mets’ hitter might be signed elsewhere as Spring Training approaches.

“We made a significant contribution to Pete,” Mets owner Steve Cohen explained during a fire interview with President of baseball akertations David Stearns. “This has been an exhausting conversation and discussion.

“Soto was difficult,” said Cohen, referring to the talks that ended with New York signing star slugger Juan Soto for a record $765 million, talking about 15 months last month. “This is bad.”

Alonso, who likes Soto is represented by Agent Scott Boras, has been a fan favorite since arriving in 2019, when he hit Rookie-Home Runs. The 30-year-old baseman has 226 home runs, third in franchise history, and saved New York from a 28-game losing streak.

“I think we all love Pete, and we’ve said it many times,” said Stearns, who spoke ahead of Steve Cohen. “I think we’ve gone through this process, we continue to express that. And we understand that this is a business and Pete, like a right, get the right – get the right, get the right, see what’s there.

“And we feel really good about the young players coming through our program,” Stearns said of the bright boons. “We saw that last year. And that’s not always the most popular view, but we saw that last year. And we’re going to need to see it again.”

Alonso and Boras Client Alex Bregman are the most notable players left out of what has been a cool free agent market for cornerbacks. Former Arizona first baseman Christian Walker ($60 million over three years with Houston) is the only inkilder in the corner who has signed a multiyear contract. Josh Bell, Carlos Santana and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt are all signed to one-man deals.

“I don’t like the structures that have been presented to us,” said Steve Cohen. “It’s very asymmetric against us and I feel strong about it. I’ll never say no. You know, there’s always something possible.

“But the truth is that we are moving forward, and we continue to bring players. And as we continue to bring players, the truth is, it gets harder to fit Pete and more expensive. Of course you have it.”

Brett Baty and Mark VIEETOS, each of whom came through the farm system as a third baseman, said Saturday they have been taking reps earlier this winter. Mendoza said he liked the Mets’ depth at the position, including Joey Menus, who hit 29 home runs over the past three seasons for the Washington Nationals before signing with New York in November.

Hours before the management panel, Alonso’s teammates — and Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza — expressed hope he and the club were still sluggish.

“I would like to see Pete for us, but I also understand that he does not make those decisions and that is between our office and Davide and Steve,” said Outfield Nornen Nimmo.

“Listen, he’s a special player — guys who can hit 40 home runs without walking off the road,” Piazza said. “When he’s on his game, he’s a special player. From a personal point of view, I hope they have something.”

On Pitch Day, fans were able to take a tour of Citi’s field, including the clubhouse and bullpen.

Notes: Soto is expected to attend but had four possible flowers out of the Dominican Republic canceled. Flight issues also prevented Demoel Núñez and Huscar Brazobán from making their expected visit. Nimmo and Francisco Lindor said they expect to be 100% when the Mets have their first performance of spring training on February 17.
