Sanjay Roy, the accused in the Kolkata rape case, will be sentenced today after the CBI court convicted him on Saturday. He was found guilty of raping and murdering a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The case sparked protests and anger among thousands of people across the country.
The CBI court charged the public volunteer under Section 64 (rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death), and Section 103 (murder). The penalty figure will be announced today.

The CBI court, convicting the public volunteer, said, “I have examined all the evidence and witnesses, and heard the arguments. After finishing all these things, I find you guilty. You are guilty. You must be punished”.

During the proceedings, Sanjay Roy, denied the crime and said that he was arrested. “I always wear a rudraksha chain around my neck. If I had committed a crime, my chain would have broken where I did. I did not do this, I was framed. Those who installed me, including one IPS officer, were acquitted for what?” Roy said.

The parents of the deceased who were present in the court, broke down after listening to the decision. “I remained faithful to you.

Kolkata police identified Sanjay Roy through a Bluetooth earphone found near the dead body. Roy was seen on CCTV footage entering the seminar hall with a phone around his neck.

The incident led to protests across the country and the anger of thousands of people. The issue turned violent after a mob vandalized the emergency ward of RG Kar Hospital on August 15 during a ‘Reclaim the Night’ rally organized by women and activists.

The Calcutta High Court took cognizance of the matter and termed the case as “heinous”. He urged the protesting doctors to return to work. The NHRC also took cognizance of the matter.

The incident led to the resignation of RG Kar College principal Sandip Ghosh as the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee came under heavy criticism for its handling of the case.

The CBI filed charge sheets against accused Sanjoy Roy in the case almost two months after the October 7 incident and the trial began in the West Bengal court in Sealdah on November 11.
