A village headman was among four people arrested for offering Friday prayers in a makeshift shed in Bareilly without seeking permission, police said on Saturday (January 18, 2025).
A case has been registered against seven people and other unknown people for the incident that took place while prohibitory orders were in effect in the region due to the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.
Behadi Station House Officer (SHO) Sanjay Tomar said that more than 20 people were offering namaz in a shed in Jam Sawant Shumali area without permission.
The police were responding to a complaint by the office manager of the Hindu Jagran Sena, a local right-wing outfit.
Himanshu Patel, a member of the outfit, wrote about the incident in ‘X’, tagging senior police officials, after which the police reached the spot and arrested some people.
A drone video of the incident has been shared on social media, the SHO said.
The police arrested village head Arif, Aqeel Ahmed, Mohammad Shahid and Chhote Ahmed. Muzammil, Qadir Ahmed and Mohammad Arif have also been booked in the case, police said.
The SHO said that legal action will be taken in this case.
