Steak ‘n Shake cooks fries in beef tallow
Fast food company Steak ‘n Shake announced Thursday that it will be serving up 100% beef fries by the end of February.
“Our patties are made with authentic, 100% beef, to achieve the highest quality and best taste,” said Chris Ward, CEO of Steak ‘n Shake, in a statement.
By the end of February, all Steak ‘n Shake restaurants will have switched from frying in vegetable oil to frying with “100% all-natural beef.”

“The consumer wants the best and deserves the best,” said Kristen Briede, the chain’s chief global development officer, in a statement.
The switch to beef tallow will ensure that Shake ‘n Shake “delivers the best fries,” he said.
Earlier Thursday, Steak ‘n Shake’s official account on X wrote, “Steak n Shake uses 100% Beef Tallow. No Cap.” “No cap” is slang for “no lie” or “really.”

The thread followed up that post with another post that said, “By the end of February 2025, all locations will use 100% organic beef. If vegetable oil breaks your heart, our tallow will make you love it again.”
Beef tallow is the fat that surrounds the kidneys of the cow.
Steak ‘n Shake previously teased the beef tallow switch on its X account. Three days before the announcement, Steak ‘n Shake sent out a poll asking “Cook Fries in 100% Beef Tallow?”

More than 90% of respondents voted “yes,” but it was unclear how long the polls were open.
Steak ‘n Shake has 436 locations throughout the United States, mostly in the South and Midwest.
The Indiana-based chain was founded in 1934 and is known for its Steakburgers.
In recent years, the use of “seed oil” in cooking has caused much controversy. In October, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. he criticized their use in fast food restaurants and called for a return to the use of beef.

“Did you know that McDonald’s used beef to make their fries from the 1940s until they ditched it in favor of seed oil in 1990? This change was made because it was thought that animal fat was unhealthy, but since we discovered that seed oil is one of the causes of the obesity epidemic too much,” Kennedy wrote in an Oct. 21 post.
The obesity rate, he said, “started to skyrocket around the same time fast food restaurants switched from beef to seed oil in their stock.”
“People who enjoy a burger and fries at night are not guilty, and the American people should have every right to eat at a restaurant without being poisoned by heavily subsidized seeds,” Kennedy said, adding, “It’s time to Make Frying Oil Tallow Again.”
