The Supreme Court on Wednesday (January 15, 2025) stayed the results of the by-election to fill the vacancy in the Bihar Legislative Council, following the ouster of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Sunil Kumar Singh.
The poll became necessary after the disqualification of MLC Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Sunil Kumar Singh last year in July.
The bench led by Justice Surya Kant heard part of Mr. Singh challenged his dismissal. The court said it will hear the defendants on Thursday (January 16, 2025) and conclude the case. The court, during the initial hearing, verbally disagreed with the comments made by the lawyer.
On 26 July 2024, the Ethics Committee of the Bihar Legislative Council expelled Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLC Sunil Singh from the council on Friday for making ‘derogatory’ remarks against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Prasad was a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the seat.
