About 24 students studying in classes VIII-X were selected from 24 different schools of the twin cities out of 326 applicants who participated in 12.th Young Innovators Program conducted at CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) recently.
The selected students spent a week in different research areas and research centers of this institution where they were exposed to how DNA is used to detect genetic diseases, how infectious diseases are studied through the biology of bacteria, how the cryo-electron microscope shows the details of biomolecules even on the surface. at the atomic level and how such tools are used to understand living systems and to create improved plant species and conservation.
“It was an amazing experience as I saw how scientists really work. I found a whole new world of research,” said S. Hitesh from Oak Valley School, one of the selected students. Mudrika Khandelwal of IIT-Hyderabad delivered the inaugural address.
“We are communicating with bright young people through this program, although few of them are scientists. The real value of this program is instilling in them a passion for learning more and solving challenges. We want them to be citizens who are motivated by science,” said CSIR-CCMB director Vinay Kumar Nandicoori.
“Our program aims to give high school students a glimpse of the excitement and opportunities that modern biology brings,” CSIR-CCMB head of communications and public relations Somdatta Karak, said in a press release.
