Grok, the AI assistant that is for some reason baked into X, is now available as a standalone app. As a version that exists as a social media tab, the Grok app can be used to create images, summarize text and answer questions, with a conversational tone that xAI, the creator of the AI assistant, calls “funny and engaging.”
The app was first tested with a limited set of users in December 2024, at the same time X released the free version of Grok available to anyone. Before that, you needed to pay at least $8 a month for X Premium to have the right to use AI.
Limits to that free access – 10 requests every two hours, three requests for image analysis per day – may also apply to the Grok app. You can use the app without signing in, or sign in with an Apple account, an X account, a Google account, or a plain old email. It’s unclear whether an X Premium subscription gets you additional benefits in the Grok app the same way you do in X.
Grok has struggled with the same problems in terms of accuracy and random image generation choices as other AI assistants like Gemini and ChatGPT. The chatbot stands out from its competitors because xAI has positioned it as being able to answer “hot questions” that other AI assistants avoid, and the Grok AI model version is open source. You’ll have to see for yourself how “bitter” the Grok app is in the end, but at least you don’t have to go to X to use it now.
