This isn’t a successor to the Legion Go—the company revealed a prototype Legion Go 2 with a slight modification—but it’s another version that comes in two flavors: Windows or SteamOS. That makes it the first licensed handheld gaming console running SteamOS. Unfortunately, there’s no dual-boot option, you have to choose which app you want at checkout, although you can use third-party game stores on SteamOS, such as the Epic Games Store.
With SteamOS, you can take advantage of cloud saving, so you can stop playing on your desktop PC or laptop and switch to Legion Go S without losing progress. You can also stream games from your PC to the console if you really need it (as long as your internet connection is good).
Apart from the software, the Legion Go S variant has the same hardware. Powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme, they sport an 8-inch 1,920 X 1,200-pixel resolution LCD display with a 120-Hz refresh rate. A brighter and smaller screen than the original Legion Go offers better battery life, although it also helps the battery to be stronger at 55.5 watt hours. It doesn’t include removable controls, or you can use the two USB-C ports to connect it to a monitor for a desktop-like experience, and there’s a microSD card slot to expand storage.
The Windows-powered Legion Go S starts at $730 and arrives this month, though there will be other configurations with new chipsets coming later in May, with prices starting at $600. The SteamOS version starts at $500 and launches in May.
