Maharashtra Excise department seizes Goa-made liquor worth Rs 1.2 crore in Pune, arrests nine

In a major pre-New Year drive, the Maharashtra Revenue Department on Monday seized a batch of Goa-produced liquor worth Rs 1.20 crore and arrested nine people in Pune, officials said.

The first operation took place at a private bus terminal in Nigdi area, where a luxury bus transporting the liquor was found.

In another operation in Nasrapur Phata, customs officials seized a vessel in which liquor was being smuggled in boxes containing fruit grains and coal. Together, the two robberies led to the seizure of liquor worth Rs 1.20 crore, said senior excise officer Charansingh Rajput.

Just two days ago, one person was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle illegal liquor worth Rs 40 lakh hidden under sacks of paddy husk in Bihar’s Nawada.

The goods department intercepted the truck and recovered the consignment of liquor at the Rajauli joint check point, when it was on its way from Jharkhand’s Chauparan to Bihar’s Muzaffarpur.

Following New Year’s Eve, various agencies throughout the country are vigilant and are conducting campaigns to arrest illegal alcohol, while also strengthening security measures, among other things, to avoid bad incidents during the celebrations.
