Actor-politician Vijay has taken a strong stance on the safety of women in Tamil Nadu, urging Governor RN Ravi to take measures to ensure their protection in the wake of the recent sexual harassment incident involving a female student in a technical university.
Vijay, founder of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), submitted the memorandum during his meeting with the Governor at Raj Bhavan on Monday. BJP state president K Annamalai praised Vijay’s move, describing it as a necessary step to address the country’s law and order concerns.
The TVK memorandum emphasized the need to “maintain law and order” and protect women across the country. “In our memorandum, we want measures to protect law and order in Tamil Nadu, apart from measures to ensure the safety of women everywhere,” said N Anand, general secretary of TVK, who accompanied Vijay during the meeting. The party also pressed for the release of Rs 2,000 crore from central funds for Cyclone Fengal relief, saying the affected people are still waiting for support.
Vijay expressed his grief over the issue in a heartfelt handwritten letter to “my dear sisters”, which was shared on TVK’s Instagram account. In the letter, Vijay expressed his displeasure with management, writing, “It is known that it is useless to question those who manage us, no matter how many times we ask them. That is what this book is about.”
She described seeing women’s daily struggles with “cruelty, disordered behavior, and sex crimes” as very painful. Assuring the women, he wrote, “Don’t worry about anything but focus on your studies. We will create a safe Tamil Nadu. We will confirm together soon.”
Meanwhile, the TVK staff who tried to distribute copies of Vijay’s book to the public in Chennai were arrested.
BJP’s Annamalai supported Vijay’s action, accusing the ruling DMK of failing to address women’s safety. In a post on social media, he urged officials from all parties to unite to ensure justice for the survivor of the beating. “The BJP welcomes Vijay’s meeting with the Governor on the lack of safety for women in the DMK regime,” Annamalai said.
