Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the allegations. harassment of Bengali speaking peopleespecially students and families, under the guise of identifying illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
In his book, Chowdhury highlighted cases involving Bengali-speaking citizens, including migrants from West Bengal districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, Nadia, West Dinajpur, and 24 Parganas, who were unfairly directed to Delhi and other parts of India.
“Recently, after the unrest and change of government in Bangladesh, there have been incidents of officials targeting Bengali-speaking students in various schools in Delhi and elsewhere, harassing them, asking about their parents and where they are. The MCD) under orders from the state government, has made a special effort to identify immigrants illegally from Bangladesh,” Chowdhury’s book. noted.
“This is trying to drive away the poor Bengali speaking students and their families but, it rarely proves to be appropriate, to target any Bangladeshi tribe. The same abuse is happening in many other states as well. There are many migrant workers from Murshidabad, Maldah, West Dinajpur, Nadia, 24 Parganas etc. in various states including Delhi,” it added.
The Congress leader said these efforts repeatedly they fail to identify the real migrants from Bangladesh but they equally affect genuine citizens of India from West Bengal.
He urged the Prime Minister to ensure that genuine citizens of West Bengal are not treated unfairly or abused. He called for an equal way to identify real illegal immigrants while protecting the rights and dignity of legal citizens.
“My request is that the effort should always be to find out that genuine Bangladeshi people are sneaking in but not harassing a Bengali migrant from West Bengal. Please use your understanding and power to see that no harassment comes to Bengali speaking students and families from West Bengal,” Chowdhury wrote. in the letter, attaching a supporting document for reference.
The former Congressman’s letter came a day after the Education Department asked Delhi schools to ban the registration of “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants” by verifying the document verification process at the time of acceptance.
Delhi Police sources told news agency PTI that more than 1,500 1,500 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were identified during inspections across the nation’s capital.
