Road closures and traffic diversions in the Pune Camp area were announced on Wednesday evening for the Christmas festivities, which drew huge crowds on major roads and connecting highways.
These traffic changes will come into effect from 7:00 on Wednesday and will continue to operate until the crowds and will also include traffic closures on busy roads. The order in this regard was issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende.
Every year a large number of people from Pune and surrounding areas visit several churches and the Camp site. The Mahatma Gandhi Highway (MG) and its connecting routes attract huge crowds for Christmas celebrations and shopping.
Major traffic disruptions in Pune on Christmas
Traffic from Sarbatwala Chowk to Mahaveer Chowk will be stopped and diverted through Taboot Street chowk. Traffic from Y Junction to MG Road will be stopped at 15 Agasti Chowk and will be diverted via Qureshi Masjid and Sujata Mastani Chowk.
Traffic from Indira Gandhi Chowk to Mahaveer Chowk will be stopped and will be diverted through Lashkar Police Station Chowk. Traffic from Volga Chowk to Mohammed Rafi Chowk will be stopped and diverted through East Street and India Gandhi Chowk.
Traffic police officials said teams from the local police station and the traffic control branch will be deployed on Wednesday evening, especially in areas that attract large crowds.
The orders issued by DCP Zende stated that these traffic restrictions will not apply to emergency vehicles including fire tenders and ambulances, and police and military vehicles on duty.
