PM Modi attends Catholic bishops’ Christmas function, seeks unity and harmony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the importance of love, harmony and brotherhood is the basis of the teachings of Lord Christ. He also urged people to strengthen these values.

Speaking at the Christmas celebrations organized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), Modi expressed grief over the violence and social unrest, highlighting the need for a human-centered approach to the world’s challenges.

Referring to past tragedies, including the Christmas market attack in Germany and the 2019 Easter bombings in Sri Lanka, Modi stressed the need for collective action to counter such threats.

This is the first time that the Prime Minister of India is attending a program at the CBCI headquarters.

“It was a very satisfying moment for me when we safely brought back Father Alexis Prem Kumar from war-torn Afghanistan ten years ago. He stayed there for eight months and was imprisoned… For us, all these missions are not just for business. but an emotional commitment to bring back family members,” said Prime Minister Modi as quoted by news agency PTI.

He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to protecting its citizens, noting its efforts during the COVID-19 crisis. India has provided medicines to more than 150 countries and vaccines to several countries, demonstrating its commitment to global well-being.

“Some countries, despite fighting for human rights, are reluctant to help poor countries during times of violence. India, however, has exceeded its capacity to help,” Modi said.

“Our youth have given us hope for that dream Viksit Bharat they will definitely come true,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated His Excellency George Koovakad on the appointment of Cardinal by Pope Francis, calling this a proud moment for the nation.

Founded in 1944, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India works closely with the Catholic community across the country, promoting unity and action.
