Poet Kumar Vishwas sparked controversy with a jibe he lobbed at actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha and his daughter, actress Sonakshi Sinha, indirectly referencing her interfaith marriage during a public event.
“Teach your children Ramayana, or someone else may take away the ‘Lakshmi’ of your house, even if the house is called ‘Ramayana’,” Vishwas said at a poetry festival in Uttar Pradesh.
Shatrughan Sinha’s Mumbai house is called ‘Ramayana’ and Sonakshi Sinha recently got married to her long-time boyfriend and actor, Zaheer Iqbal, suggesting that Viswas was talking about their marriage.
Vishwas’ comments sparked a heated debate online. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate criticized the poet for making “obscene” and “cheap” comments to applause, asking, “Doesn’t a girl have the right to marry the person of her choice?”
He added that if Vishwas had read the Ramayana, he would “truly understand love,” continuing to ask, “Mister Poet, who teaches other children to read the Ramayana and the Geeta—while hating Sonakshi’s husband’s religion—have you forgotten how the same love is shown in the Ramayana?”
Another Congress leader, Surendra Rajput, also criticized the comments, calling them “cheap ideas” and saying “Lord Rama will not forgive them.”
“Kumar Vishwas, you also have a daughter. Remember, with all the hatred and shamelessness with which you have tried to smear Shatrughan Sinha Sir and his daughter Sonakshi Sinha, all the mud will fall on your face one day,” he tweeted.
Several others on the internet joined the debate, many criticizing the poet for his comments.
Vishwas has not responded to this controversy till now.
