Police in Rajasthan have arrested a notorious “thief bride”, who after getting married, defrauded rich men. The woman, who posed as a matchmaker in marriage schemes, used to steal jewelery and cash worth millions after winning the trust of her targets and their families, officials said.
The suspect was arrested during a raid in Uttarakhand. According to the police, she got married to a famous jeweler from Jaipur after connecting with him through a matrimonial app.
After being trusted by her in-laws, she fled with jewelery and cash worth Rs 36.5 lakh. Moreover, the woman even filed false cases against her husband and family in Dehradun, using the legal system to accuse them even more.
After months of investigation, the Jaipur Police tracked him down. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amit Kumar confirmed his arrest and said that he had similarly duped other businessmen and professionals in the past.
The police suspected his involvement in many such cases and interrogated him to get more information.
The case came to light on July 29, 2023, when the thrower filed a complaint with the police. He recounts how after his first wife died, he sought friendship through a dating app. She got in touch with the suspect, visited him in Dehradun, and eventually married him in February last year.
The police investigation revealed a well-planned scheme. The woman specifically targeted divorced or wealthy businessmen and professionals with marriage apps. After receiving contact, he would gather information about his victims’ financial assets and businesses.
After the wedding, he would spend three to four months building trust with the family before disappearing with the valuables.
Those who tried to confront him found themselves involved in false accusations of domestic violence and abuse. Using these legal threats, he extorted large sums of money, and sent those who opposed him to prison.
Authorities have urged anyone who may have been a victim of his tactics to come forward.
