Apple is reportedly working on a doorbell system that can unlock your door with Face ID

Apple is developing a smart doorbell and locking system that can use Face ID to unlock the door for known residents, reports Mark Gurman newspaper. The face-scanning doorbell will connect to a smart deadbolt, which can install third-party HomeKit-compatible locks, according to Gurman. Or, Apple may “[team] and a locksmith to provide a complete system on day one.”

It will probably be a while before we see a door lock system hit the market, though, if we see it at all. Gurman reports that it is in the early stages of development and won’t be ready until late next year. The doorbell could help Apple compete with the likes of Amazon’s Ring and Google Nest, and is one of the few smart home products Apple is working on, according to Gurman. The company is also reportedly making a home security camera, which will work with what is expected to debut next year.
