2024 College Football Playoff odds: Who will advance to the quarterfinals?

Nine teams are left with a chance to win the national title.

The College Playoff bracket was revealed on Dec. 9, and the newly formatted tournament to determine the next college football champion is about to begin.

The first round continues, and each of the four quarterfinals will be decided on Saturday night.

Let’s check out the odds for each quarterfinal game at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Dec. 21, and what we need to know about each game.

No. 7 NOTRE DAME (+100) vs. No. 2 GEORGIA (-1.5, -120)

What you need to know: The Fighting Irish have won 11 straight, including their big 27-17 victory over Indiana in the first round of the CFP, in a game where they went on a 27-3 fourth quarter run. Georgia last took the field on December 7th, when they beat Texas in the SEC Championship. The two teams have one rival in common: Georgia Tech. The Irish beat the Yellow Jackets 31-13 on Oct. 19, while the Bulldogs edged GT 44-42 in eight overtimes on Nov. 29. However, the main story line before this game — the only story line — is Georgia’s starting quarterback. Carson Beck will likely miss CFP after injuring his throwing elbow in that Dec. 7 win over the Longhorns. Enter sophomore Gunner Stockton, who has 206 passing yards and one touchdown on the season. Still, the Bulldogs opened as a slight favorite, despite the QB shakeup. How will the lineup evolve in the coming weeks?

No. 6 PENN STATE (-9, -305) vs. No. 3 BOISE STATE (+245)

What you need to know: However, after Penn State demolished SMU 38-10 in the first round — PSU led 28-0 and 38-3 at one point — the Nittany Lions opened as heavy favorites over Boise State. The Nittany Lions have lost twice this season by a combined 15 points, at the hands of two other CFP teams, Ohio State and Oregon. The Broncos’ lone loss of the season came against Oregon by three points. Conventional anti-statistics tell you that Boise State should be able to hang with the Nittany Lions, but the spread suggests otherwise, after PSU put up 38 on SMU without a passing touchdown. Its defense forced three interceptions and had two pick-sixes. PSU has taken the field 14 times this season, and nine times it has allowed 13 points or less. In addition, only five times have the Nittany Lions allowed over 100 rushing yards, and no team has topped 200. Well, enter the Broncos and all-world running back Ashton Jeanty, who ran for it at least 127 yards in every game this season and surpassed the 200-yard mark six times. Something will have to give.

What you need to know: Yes, after the Longhorns’ 38-24 win over Clemson in the first round, they were favored to almost beat the Sun Devils, the defending champions from the Big 12. How? Yes, Texas only has two losses on the year, to the same Georgia Bulldogs. The two teams share one common opponent, as both beat Mississippi State handily, but the Longhorns showed just how strong they can be on both sides of the ball in the first round, jumping out to a 31-10 lead over Clemson after the Tigers scored. seven on their first drive. What the Sun Devils will have to prepare for is the second-best defense in the country, as the Longhorns allowed just 12.5 points per game in the regular season (Ohio State allowed 10.9). And in 10 of the 13 regular season games, the Longhorns scored 17 or less. So, will Arizona State be able to put points on the board?
