Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday (December 21, 2024) inaugurated the 72nd session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) at Prajna Bhavan in Agartala.

Mr. Shah, speaking at the 72nd meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Agartala, said the time has come for a change in the way the military is working to end the violence in the northeast, to ensure that people get speedy justice. . He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had brought peace to the region by signing 20 peace agreements in 10 years, which led to the surrender of 9,000 armed forces.

“The police have been fighting insurgents in the north-east for the past forty years. “Since the riots are over now, we need to change the way the military operates to ensure that people get justice within three years of installing the SCALE,” he said.

The Home Minister also said that the Center has spent Rs 81,000 crore on rail connectivity and Rs 41,000 crore on road network in the north-eastern region.

Besides, the central government is focusing on organic farming in the region, said Shah.

“The center has established the National Organic Corporation Ltd to develop this sector. I urge all CMs (north-east) to sign agreements with NOCL for packaging, marketing and export of organic products,” he added.

The Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, along with Governors, Chief Ministers of all the eight North Eastern States, and senior officials were also present on the occasion.

“There will be serious discussions about the direction of the future region, without reviewing the progress of the council’s work this year,” Mr. Scindia told reporters.

The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) team is also likely to join the talks, sources said on Friday (December 20, 2024).

Mr. Shah had arrived in Tripura on Friday (December 20, 2024) to preside over the 72nd session of the NEC.

The council is an institution involved in the economic and social development of the northeastern region, which includes Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
