Final report soon to develop package for pollution control of Edappally canals, Perandoor

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) will soon submit data on various sources of domestic sewage discharged into the Edappally and Perandoor canals, as part of a feasibility study by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Institute of Environmental Engineering Research (CSIR-NEERI) to develop a solution to this issue .

Secondary data on pollutant loads from sewage spills along the canals will be compiled by the board and sent to a research team to issue a final report. The study was initiated according to the guidelines issued by the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which took cognizance of the report ‘Sewage pollution is high in Perandoor, Edappally Canals,’ A Hindu online on January 28, 2021.

The order issued on August 20, 2024, by the Court consisting of Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, Member of Justice, and Dr. Satyagopal Korlapati, Expert Member, directed the board and CSIR-NEERI to submit the final report immediately, as “the case was pending since 2021 without assistance.”

Researchers from NEERI visited the canal banks from October 15 to 18. They asked the board to submit secondary data on pollution sources, catchment areas, and drainage maps. The board, in turn, asked the Irrigation Department and the Kochi Corporation to provide details. The research team also suggested identifying suitable government land to develop a modular process package system.
