IIT Delhi transfers lightweight bullet jacket technology to 3 Indian firms

The Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat (ABHED) bulletproof jacket technology, which was developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), was transferred to three companies. The technology for the lightweight jacket, which weighs at least 30 percent less than a conventional bulletproof jacket at 9 kg, was transferred to Midhani (Rohtak), SMPP Pvt Ltd (Delhi), and AR Polymers (Kanpur).

The jacket, designed to meet BIS Level V and VI standards, provides enhanced ballistic protection while significantly improving the soldier’s mobility.

Revolution plates

The bullet jacket stands out with its high-quality ballistic plates, made of advanced composite materials. These plates provide unparalleled protection while maintaining a lightweight design, a huge improvement over traditional metal or ceramic plates.

The materials used are a ceramic layer that breaks or damages bullets on impact, and an Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) layer that absorbs and disperses bullet energy, preventing penetration.

The plates are also modular, allowing customization for specific equipment, and are resistant to multiple hits, maintaining effectiveness during continuous fire.

Multi-level protection

The plates can withstand a variety of high-velocity firearms, including 7.62 mm rounds from AK-47s and sniper rifles, 5.56 mm rounds from standard weapons and 9 mm rounds from rifles and submachine guns.

This versatile protection ensures the jacket’s versatility in a variety of combat situations, from urban warfare to sniper engagements.

Lightweight, travel-friendly design

The coat weighs only 9 kg, a reduction of 20-30 percent compared to older models that weigh between 11-14 kg. This lightweight design improves troop mobility, making it easier for soldiers to navigate high-risk missions without being weighed down by heavy gear.

The jacket has a modular protection design that fits you that includes front and back plates to protect the torso during high-risk movements, side plates to cover important areas such as ribs and abdomen, and Optional Groin and Neck Guards provide additional protection during special operations. .

Ballistic plates can withstand multiple hits without losing effectiveness, ensuring that soldiers remain protected during hot conditions.

Rigorous testing and certification

The plates have undergone thorough testing to ensure battlefield reliability such as live fire testing, weather resistance and blast resistance.

The ABHED jacket is a game-changer for soldiers in high-risk areas like Jammu and Kashmir and the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In addition to protection from gunshots, the plates reduce blunt force trauma, a common hazard from bullet impacts.
