The government has increased the powers of a joint parliamentary committee that will consider two bills proposing simultaneous elections from 31 to 39 MPs, giving representation to other parties.

The list of Lok Sabha MPs proposed by the government now includes one member from Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI (M) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), apart from two members from BJP and one from Samajwadi. party.

The House’s business list for Friday (December 20) includes a proposal from Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to refer the two laws to a joint committee, including 27 members of the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha.

The new Lok Sabha MPs proposed to be part of the committee are Baijayant Panda and Sanjay Jaiswal from BJP, SP’s Chhotelal, Shiv Sena’s Anil Desai (UBT), LJP’s Shambhavi and and K Radhakrishnan of the CPI(M).

The committee will consider two “one nation one election” (ONOE) laws, including one to amend the Constitution.

Former Union Ministers Anurag Thakur and PP Chaudhary, besides BJP’s Bhartruhari Mahtab, and Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are among the Lok Sabha members nominated for this panel.

Among the Lok Sabha members, 17 are from the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP, including 12 from the BJP.
