TORONTO (AP) – Canada Post said operations will resume at the post office on Tuesday after a nearly month-long shutdown.
The workers went on strike after failing to reach a deal negotiated with Canada Postal workers on key issues, including wages, job security, and how to work on the proposed extension of weekend delivery.
The federal government acted Friday to end the suspension after Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon announced he would refer the dispute to the Canada Industrial Relations Board, an independent administrative tribunal that specializes in resolving workplace disputes.

However, the board ruled late Sunday that the negotiations were inconsistent after two days of hearings and ordered nearly 55,000 workers back to work. This will also extend the current collective agreement until May 22, 2025.
Canada Post said it has agreed with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to increase wages by 5% until the date the collective agreement expires.
Earlier, the Labor minister dismissed calls for Ottawa to intervene, saying it was up to both parties to come to an agreement. But he said Canadians – especially small businesses, people in remote communities and aboriginal people – have suffered the most from the strike.
MacKinnon noted that Canada Post was built to deliver letters but their volume has decreased significantly and there is a very competitive parcel delivery market.
