United States women’s national team forward Trinity Rodman left the field in a wheelchair during the Washington Spirit’s 3-0 loss to the Kansas City Current on Friday, attributed by her agent to “a severe back injury.”
That’s what Mike Senkowski told The Washington Post on Saturday about Rodman, adding that his back remained a concern the next day.
“Still in a [lot] of pain, but I have hope [she] avoid serious injury,” Senkowski told The Post.
Rodman used his body to dodge the ball from current player Temwa Chawinga in the 75th minute of the NWSL game in Kansas City, Mo’s knee. Chawinga appeared to make contact with Rodman’s spine, who has a history of back problems.
Rodman, 22, first bent his hands on his hips before dropping to his knees. He received treatment and eventually left the field before opting to sit in a wheelchair to be taken to the locker room.
Spirit coach Jonathan Giraldez confirmed that Rodman has a back injury but noted that he has “no information” to add.
Courtney Brown entered the game in the 78th minute in place of Rodman, who has collected eight goals and six assists in 20 games this season for the Spirit (14-5-2, 44 points).
The goals were put in the net for Current (12-3-6, 42 points) by Nichelle Prince, Lo’eau LaBonta and Chawinga, who ended up scoring his 16th goal to extend his lead in the NWSL Golden Boot race.
