Chicago Fire sent striker Georgios Koutsias to FC Lugano of Switzerland on loan on Friday.

The annual loan starts on January 1 and includes a permanent transfer option at the end of the agreement.

Koutsias, 20, has five goals and three assists in 57 MLS games (18 starts) with the Fire since 2023-24.

“We are excited to see Georgios continue to develop with his teammates at FC Lugano,” said Fire coach Gregg Berhalter. “He has expressed a desire to return to Europe, and this move gives him the opportunity to continue to grow in a highly competitive league. It also gives us more flexibility as we work to build a strong squad for the 2025 season.”

The loan opens up the U-22 Initiative and international roster spots in Chicago, which retains the right to recall the Greek international at any time.

FC Lugano, which competes in the Swiss Super League, was bought by Fire owner Joe Mansueto in 2021.
