Schools in Chennai and 10 other districts of Tamil Nadu have declared today, December 12, as a holiday due to the forecast of heavy rain. In Puducherry and Karaikal, both schools and colleges have been closed due to the orange alert in the union territory.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh due to a “well-marked low pressure area” in the southwest Bay of Bengal that was first spotted on December 7.
The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai, in a tweet predicted “scattered light to moderate rain over Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts, with possible severe spell over south Chennai.”
In an orange warning, the RMC predicted isolated rain at a few places in the 11 districts of Tamil Nadu that have declared school holidays, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.
Fishermen have been advised against entering the sea from December 11 to 13.
In a separate report, the IMD said the Low Pressure Area on December 9 in the southeast Bay of Bengal and the eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean has been marked and classified as a “well-marked low pressure area.”
“A cyclonic upper air circulation extends into the mid-tropospheric levels. The system is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast during the next 24 hours,” the update said.
