“If Shakespeare were alive today, what would he write about?” Philipp Stollenmayer asked the audience during this week’s Devs Day 2024: Game Awards Broadcast. According to Stollenmayer, Shakespeare was writing about the invention of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich from the point of view of the rebellious strawberry and the disillusioned peanut. Also, it can be music. Oh, and it can take the form of an interactive scrapbook with kids as great voice actors. Obviously.
PBJ – Music is the latest mobile game from Stollenmayer’s studio, Kamibox, and offers a completely different way to play cooperatively. PBJ is a side-scrolling narrative journey made of real-life paper collages, with images cut from vintage cookbooks and stitched together in stop-motion. The vibe is modern Monty Python mixed with Julia Child, with a dash of theater for balance.
In PBJplayers can push, pull and drag everything to change the story, including lovely, food-based renditions of Shakespeare quotes and lots of singing. On the musical side of things, Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Lorraine Bowen writes and performs all the songs on PBJand everything seems to have his signature happy, strange feeling. There are also unlockable remixes in each of the 10 stages.
Mixing mediums is kind of Stollenmayer’s thing: He’s a papercraft master turned game designer, and many of his projects combine the two disciplines in some way. Under Kamibox, he made mobile games Sometimes He dies, Bacon – The Game, Blooming Song and a dozen other titles, and has received an Apple Design Award, an Independent Games Festival nomination and other awards since founding the studio in 2012.
PBJ it will come out in early 2025, and it’s headed for the iPhone and iPad.
