Balatro+ is Apple’s Arcade Game of the Year because it is

The end of the year is fast approaching and that means all the best lists for 2024 are coming out. The latest is Apple’s App Store Awards, which highlight 17 apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and Vision Pro. The most notable winner for us here at Engadget? Balatro+ from LocalThunk.

Balatro+ takes home the Apple Arcade Game of the Year award after capturing many of our hearts. The rogue-like game is a great combination of poker, deck building, solitaire and more that becomes quickly addictive. Available exclusively on iOS through Apple Arcade or as a standalone purchase from September. It is also available on all other platforms, including PC and Nintendo Switch.

If you’re the oddball out there who prefers physical games to digital ones (a situation I can sometimes relate to) you’ll be happy to know that the $16 Balatro playing card deck is available for pre-order on Fangamer. However, it won’t ship until March 2025 so you may have to check out the game digitally first.

Other award-winning games on Apple’s App Store include AFK journey, Thank You Goodness Here! again Squad Busters. Apple also announced six apps recognized for their Cultural impact. The winners are posted in this category Thatan AI-powered navigation app for blind or partially sighted people that provides information like what’s happening at intersections and turn-by-turn directions.
