“OMG GUYS I LITERALLY F—ED THE UNITED HEALTHCARE CEO ASSASSIN,” Calloway, 33, wrote on X on Monday, December 9, the same day Mangione was arrested by law enforcement while eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was charged with murder in New York and faces four additional charges, including forgery and criminal possession of a firearm, CNN reported.
In a subsequent tweet, Calloway wrote, “Okay, he was honestly not a killer when we—we were planning. … What I know about it. Anyway!!!!”
Some people quickly expressed doubts about the accuracy of Calloway’s claim.
“Receipts Caroline we need receipts,” wrote one X user, while another cried, “God level grifter.”
Calloway has been called out for living a lie before. In the 2019 essay of The Cut titled “I Was Caroline Calloway,” who was Calloway’s friend Natalie Beach recalled being paid to ghostwrite Calloway’s Instagram captions, discovering that Calloway had bought fake social media followers and helping Calloway write his book. (Calloway received a six-figure book deal to write a so-called memoir School Girl (but he backed out of the deal in 2017, returning most of his $100,000.)
“Caroline was caught between who she was and who she believed herself to be, which in the end may have been more about her,” Beach wrote. “That’s why, when people ask me if Caroline is a cheater, I try to explain that if she is, her first mark is always her.”

He publicly celebrated when The New Yorker published a review comparing it to a collection of Beach essays.
“‘The beach book, on the other hand, has almost edgy roots. … New Yorker review. “God, I HAVE MADE A GREAT PERSON – YOU DON’T KNOW IT YET!!!!!
Calloway can be counted on to make eyebrow-raising statements online. His latest claim about Mangione comes months after he said he “hasn’t read a literate person in two years” during an appearance in May on the “No Jumper” podcast.
“I meet them on Hinge, and I think if I hang out with them more than a couple of times, they can get enough insight into my life to see who I am, but most of them don’t. ask, and I don’t tell them,” he continued.
Calloway also sparked controversy in October when he announced on social media that he had no plans to leave his coastal home in Sarasota, Florida despite dire warnings to evacuate as Hurricane Milton approached land.
“If I really die in this storm, my books will increase in price. Order now,” he wrote on Instagram Story at the time.
It’s unclear whether Calloway is telling the truth or joking about the alleged connection to Mangione. Mangione is accused of shooting and killing Thompson outside the entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel in New York City on Wednesday, December 4. After a five-day manhunt, Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on Monday.
