Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Bangladesh on Monday for a day-long visit, the first high-level visit from India since Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in August following massive, violent protests.
The high-level visit also comes at a time of increasing strain in relations between New Delhi and Dhaka due to attacks on minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh after Hasina’s ouster.
Messi is determined to have full talks with his Bangladesh counterpart Md. Jashim Uddin also met with the former foreign minister of the country, Mohammad Touhid Hossain. He is also expected to discuss India’s concerns with Dhaka regarding the recent attacks.
The close ties between India and Bangladesh came under severe strain after Hasina was forced to leave the country in the face of massive anti-government protests in August. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus came to power days after Hasina took refuge in India.
Relations have deteriorated significantly in recent weeks due to attacks on Hindus and the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das.
In the past few weeks there have been incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities and attacks on temples in the neighboring country in the past few weeks which has caused great concern in New Delhi.
