In the cyber fraud case, two Non-Resident Indian (NRI) sisters identified as Suman Kakkar and Vinay Thapliyal, who visited India were identified around Rs 1.9 crore in Lucknow.
They are said to be scammers”you are digitally boundsisters, threatening to charge them with money laundering.
Claiming that their bank accounts were being used by terrorists, the fraudsters forced the sisters to withdraw the huge sum of money saying that they were avoiding a life sentence.
The two victims, both Canadian citizens, had traveled to India. These criminals pretended to be officers of the Mumbai Crime Branch and threatened the sisters through video calls. A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Lucknow, and the investigators have managed to freeze Rs 25 lakh from the amount transferred.
The stolen money was reportedly transferred to multiple bank accounts in four different states. The police are currently investigating the case to find the culprits and recover the remaining amount.
In recent days, there have been many cases of “digital arrest”. One such case involved a former Miss India winner.
Shivankita Dixitwinner of Femina Miss India 2017, became a victim of online fraud when fraudsters, posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, “digitally bound” her for almost two hours and forced her to transfer Rs 99,000.
Living in Agra with her family, Shivankita received a call from someone claiming to be a CBI officer. The caller accused him of involvement in money laundering and human trafficking, saying his HDFC Bank account was linked to serious crimes including child abduction and robbery.
The fraudsters demanded Rs 2.5 lakh, threatening to arrest him if he failed to do so. Under intense pressure, Shivankita Dixit transferred Rs 99,000, the maximum allowed by her account limit.
In one case, a A 76-year-old doctor from Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad, lost Rs 28 lakh to fraudsters posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials.
