Robert Voets/CBSEvery season of A survivor there are talks of a union of men or women but they are not realized – again Jeff Probst he has a feeling he knows why.
“Historically, we’ve never had gender-based alliances,” the Survivor host, 63, said on her “On Fire” podcast following the Wednesday, Dec. 4 episode. “The Black Widow alliance Cirie [Fields,] Parvati [Shallow,] Natalie [Bolton] again Amanda Kimmel obviously it was very noticeable and very powerful, but frankly speaking, I think they don’t work because the game is not fluid.”
Probst has been talking about an outstanding female team since season 16 Micronesiawhich aired in 2008, is led by Shallow, who is now 42 years old. Erik Reichenbach giving up his immunity and later voted him out. Shallow would go on to win the season.
Almost twenty years later, no other gender conventions have been able to recreate the success of the Black Widow Brigade. After watching dozens of players try to form a team, Probst pondered why no one was able to come together.
“It’s become a very, very difficult thing to keep a group of four or five people together in any situation at any time,” Probst said on the podcast. “Therefore, if you start relying on sex only, you are giving up on many other important things. ‘Do we think the same way about strategy? Do I trust you?’”
Probst added that players can’t just build trust because they’re of the same “same sex.”
“There are just so many variables that go into building a great alliance,” he reflected. “And the minute anyone on the outside hears that it might be based on something as visible as gender, I think it makes it more difficult.”

“I think the gameplay in the new era is very different than the old era for a lot of reasons,” Probst said of the game’s evolution. “The most remarkable thing is that it keeps changing because the game is being played quickly. And one second… can change the whole game. It’s one of the signs, actually. You go to the prize, see the hole and take it. You try to improve your game every second of every day because all the other players are doing the same thing.”
Although Survivor did not see the gender alliance succeed in the new era, Probst does not rule out the possibility – but it will be an uphill battle.
“If a group of men or women can pull off a gender-based coalition, it will be very significant,” he said. “Because the chances of someone leaving the alliance at any time is very high, and you don’t want to be the one left. [behind.]”
