Communications Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the government is awaiting the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the allocation of satellite spectrum, which they expect soon. He stressed that all service providers, including Starlink (satellite internet company), owned by Elon Musk, must meet all licensing conditions required to operate within India’s regulatory framework.
Nationwide 4G rollout by BSNL in December
The Minister highlighted the progress of BSNL, saying that the state-owned telecom company will expand 4G services across India in December. Regarding the import of telecom equipment, he reiterated that all companies must comply with the “Trusted Source” process to ensure network security.
BharatNet 3 and expanding rural connectivity
Under the BharatNet 3 project, efforts to bridge the digital divide are progressing, aiming to connect 50,000 Gram Panchayats. The Minister also mentioned about the ongoing work to monetize MTNL assets, and MTNL and BSNL are currently working together. Notably, MTNL’s large debt comes with a private guarantee, and the company is working with banks to meet loan repayments.
Call drop and Quality of Service (QoS) measures
Addressing the problems of call drops and quality of service (QoS), the Minister shared that the monitoring frequency has increased from four to twelve times a year. Monitoring will now take place at the cell level and not just at the tower site, with testing in line with international standards. Telecom employees who fail to meet these standards may face financial penalties.
Action on spam and fake calls
On the ongoing issue of spam and fake calls, the Minister revealed that 1.35 crore calls are blocked every day. So far, 1,900 people have been targeted for fake calls, and 18 lakh phone numbers have been blacklisted.
