The Chicago Bears are considering firing offensive line coordinator Shane Waldron after another bad outing, coach Matt Eberflus said Monday.
“The process of that, we’re going through that right now,” he said. “All those changes and changes and things we’re going to do — we’re in the testing phase of that.”
Eberflus vowed to make changes following a 19-3 blowout against the New England Patriots for Chicago’s third straight loss. He just wasn’t ready to announce himself.
“I think right now, coming out of here in less than 24 hours you’ve made all those changes or changes you want to make and you’re saying it,” Eberflus said. “If I have those answers, I’ll get them for you. I’m not in that time right now.”
Eberflus said the decision about Waldron is “only mine, yessir.” Chicago could strip Waldron of his playing career if they don’t waive him.
The Bears (4-5) ranked 30th in the NFL in offense and 24th in scoring entering Sunday. Chicago has gone 23 games and 23 possessions without a touchdown since scoring a last-minute touchdown at Washington in Week 8, when it lost on a Hail Mary pass to Jayden Daniels, and the program is about to get even tougher. Six of the final eight games will be against the NFC North, starting with the visit of Green Bay this week.
Waldron is in his first year with the Bears after replacing the fired Luke Getsy. He spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll in Seattle. Helped quarterback Geno Smith go from walk-on to AP Comeback Player of the Year in 2022 after passing for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns.
In Chicago, the players urged Waldron to coach them harder after the loss at Indianapolis in Week 3. The Bears won their next three games against struggling teams, defeating the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Since then, Caleb Williams seems to be regressing. The No. 1 draft pick. 1 completed 48 of 95 passes during that stretch and was sacked nine times against New England, after showing signs of improvement during the winning streak.
“We won consecutive games, so there is evidence on the tape that we had a meeting, consistent football, we played winning football and for you to sit there and say we didn’t do that, it’s not true,” Eberflus. said. “I can say that I also understand that we have lost three times in a row and there is something urgent there and there are repairs, changes needed in that system because it did not work in the last three weeks, and I am perfect. I know that, and, I’m not at that point just in terms of saying those changes because we’re in the middle of that process.”

The Bears will try to snap Green Bay’s 10-game losing streak when they host the Packers on Sunday. Chicago has lost 25 of the last 28 meetings, including the NFC championship at the end of the 2010 season.
